Buying Vinyl Plank & What You Should Look For
The frankly swanky plank you can buy today is a far cry from the vinyl of yesteryear. Not only does it bring in a natural element to room décor but beneath a modern chic look is a tough, practical, waterproof surface that can stand up to almost anything your kids can throw at it.
However not all vinyl plank is of the same quality so when purchasing here are some key questions you should ask to find out if your pick is the floor you bargained for.
There are fast-click and glue down options. If you are installing yourself, the fast-click style will allow you to install without having to deal with applying a resin. If you are not a handy type though or you don’t have previous experience, a contractor is recommended who can check to see that floors are level and smooth out any problem areas to ensure you get the best finish.
To make modern vinyl plank perfect for contemporary living it has to be tough as nails. Check to see the thickness of the wear layer. Merit Luxury floors provide a 12mil wear layer plus three other key elements that combine to deliver ultra-durability; a heavy-duty backer, a fiberglass stabilizing layer and a UV polyurethane finish that is fortified with crystal ceramic beads. Ask your retailer about what protective layers are built into the flooring.
Check that floors are tested and certified safe by a body such as Floor Score which ensures a minimum amount of emissions are released from materials used in fabrication. These can build up in indoor environments. You want to make sure that floors are made from virgin vinyl which does not contain phthalates or heavy metals. Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) should be measured at less than or equal to 0.5mg/m3.
Ask whether the flooring carries a warranty and read the terms carefully which includes adherence to the manufacturer’s installation and care directions. The best plank systems will offer a limited lifetime “wear-thru” warranty. This applies to wear affecting the top printed layer through to the backing and may not include finish or shine. Note warranties will not cover improper installation or installation in areas not recommend such as in exterior locations or continually wet areas.
Note that some retailers keep stock at hand that can be ordered at short notice while others order according to needs. If you are planning a new build or remodel, you may have sufficient lead time and materials can generally be procured in as little as 2-3 weeks.
